novonic® E-Blocker | FAQ

WHAT IS ELECTRIC SMOG?
Electric smog can be understood to mean electromagnetic radiation. It is a term used to describe the electromagnetic fields caused by high-voltage power lines, radio relay and radio transmitters and mobile and wireless applications such as WLAN or Bluetooth.

HOW DO ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS AFFECT THE BODY?
Some high-frequency, electromagnetic waves such as those present in mobile applications are reflected by the body, while others are absorbed and converted into heat. Studies undertaken by leading institutions show that electromagnetic radiation can have a negative impact on health.

WHAT TYPES OF ELECTRIC SMOG ARE THERE?
There are low-frequency fields and high-frequency fields. Low-frequency fields generally have a range of up to 30 kHz; that of domestic electricity is 50 Hz. Low-frequency fields are produced when electricity is conducted. In mobile applications, high-frequency fields of up to 300 GHz are radiated.

CAN I PROTECT MYSELF AGAINST RADIATION?
Even people who don’t use mobile phones can’t protect themselves from electromagnetic radiation entirely. There are electromagnetic fields everywhere where you can use a mobile phone. Using blocking fabrics like novonic® E-Blocker can considerably reduce exposure.

IS ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION DANGEROUS?
The limit values of radiation exposure are defined in the Electromagnetic Fields Ordinance (26th Federal Emission Control Ordinance). The radiation emitted from mobile phones has both a thermal effect and an athermal effect, and discussions are still underway as to whether this causes cell changes. The thermal effect means that the body can no longer regulate the energy it has absorbed and converts it into heat. The athermal effect is suspected of causing metabolic changes in cells. There are a number of studies ongoing on this topic, though leading scientists have already called for the public to exercise caution and use mobile phones sensibly.

WHAT IS PULSED RADIATION?
The signal emitted from a mobile phone to a base station is not continuous, rather it is a recurring signal transmitted at intervals of 4.615 milliseconds, or 217 times a second, therefore 217 Hz. Critics blame pulsed radiation for a multitude of harmful effects.

WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION?
In your own life, you should try to reduce sources of radiation as much as possible. When mobile phones are switched on, you should keep them as far away as possible from your body. If possible, use a landline to make calls. Using a headset can also reduce exposure around the head, and blocking fabrics like novonic® E-Blocker help to minimise exposure.

CAN HIGH-FREQUENCY RADIATION CAUSE CANCER?
As a result of various studies, there is a suspected link between high-frequency radiation and cancer, but as yet, there is no solid scientific information. Do however remember that digital wireless technology only recently came into use and it is only possible to make a definite judgement over longer periods of time. A cautious approach to this topic is therefore certainly recommended.

ARE MOBILE PHONES DANGEROUS?
A number of studies are researching for scientific evidence that there is a link between the use of mobile phones and cancer. Doctors aren’t ruling out that headaches or sleeping disorders could be linked to electromagnetic radiation. As yet, however, there is no evidence on this matter.

HOW DO CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE REACT TO ELECTRIC SMOG?
Doctors believe that children have a more sensitive reaction to electric smog than adults, because their bodies aren’t yet fully developed. An even more cautious approach is therefore advisable with children and young people.

HOW DOES MOBILE PHONE RADIATION COMPARE WITH THE BASE STATION RADIATION?
Mobile phones are mobile transmitting stations. Unlike the base station, mobile phone radiation is emitted close to the body, making the resulting amount of energy that affects the body much greater. A five-minute phone call on a mobile phone equates to the amount of energy emitted by a base station over 24 hours that would affect us from a distance of 50 metres.

WHAT IS NOVONIC® E-BLOCKER?
novonic® E-Blocker is a newly developed fabric with outstanding blocking characteristics. Using novonic® E-Blocker with a headset reduces the thermal effect (SAR) by virtually 100%. Leading experts such as the Universität der Bundeswehr confirm the high blocking values of this fabric.

DOES NOVONIC® E-BLOCKER MAKE CLOTHING LESS COMFORTABLE?
novonic® E-Blocker is washable and can withstand cleaning. This does not change the fabric’s effectiveness. novonic® E-Blocker is generally integrated under the lining of clothing where it cannot be felt.

DOES NOVONIC® E-Blocker IMPAIR THE FUNCTIONALITY OF MY MOBILE PHONE?
The mobile would receive no network coverage if it were placed completely inside novonic® E-Blocker. But lining just the side of clothing next to the body with novonic® E-Blocker will not interfere with the functionality of the mobile phone.
